The nocturnal celebration known as the “Noche de San Juan” (St. John’s Night), will take place on the eve of June 24th.
On this night, millions of people all over the world make a great excuse to party and have a blast, while reliving a religious celebration in honor of St. John the Baptist. In Puerto Rico, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy the capital city, while participating in a customary and enjoyable good-luck ritual. Yes, that’s right, good luck!
The tradition states that at midnight, one should fall backwards seven times into any body of water in order to be cleansed and to bring good luck upon oneself.
Some people even celebrate with flowers and aromatherapy. Needless to say, it’s an island wide celebration where people flock to the coasts and use this pretext to enjoy the beach and meet other people.
Puerto Ricans celebrate it all around the island, be it at the beach, rivers or pools. In the Metropolitan Area, the beaches at Isla Verde, Ocean Park, Condado and El Escambrón are the preferred choice of many.
But, how can you have a safe and enjoyable celebration? Here are some tips to make your Noche de San Juan unforgettable.
In order to have a great experience as part of the celebration your must be prepared. You will want to avoid having to go back and forth once you get to the beach, so it’s important to have everything you need at once to enjoy an evening at the beach:
- Pack a bag with everything you’ll need: bathing suit, towel, change of clothes and a jacket in case it gets chilly.
- Remember to bring folding chairs or a blankets to sit on the sand.
- Create a playlist with your friends and bring a portable speaker
- Prepare some appetizers to go with your favorite drinks. Since it’ll be nighttime and there will be sand, bring food that’s easy to prepare and serve.
- Bring a cooler with drinks and don’t forget to bring bags to clean up your trash.
Imagine celebrating the Night of San Juan in San Juan. If you’re close to the beach it’s easier to get there, but if you’ll be driving there, there’s nothing worse than getting stuck in traffic or not being able to find a parking space once you get there:
- Arrive early so you can pick a good spot for you and your friends
- The ideal time to arrive is just at sunset, which now, during summer would be at around 7:00 PM.
Enjoy the evening
Have a great time while enjoying music and conversation, food and drinks as well as some games just before midnight. Keep your things secure in one place and meet other people that just like you, are there to enjoy the evening. Make sure that at midnight you are ready to take the plunge for good luck. Fall backwards 7 times into the water and make your petitions to Yemayá, goddess of the sea.
Be kind to the environment
Many people will be celebrating this event in Puerto Rico – which means a lot of trash will be produced. Please be kind to the environment and please pick up after yourself. Be mindful of leatherback sea turtle nests around the coast. Please let your group know if you happen to see any so you do not interrupt their natural cycle.
And have fun, dance and celebrate the good luck that’s about to come your way!
What to do if you don’t want to hit the beach?
It’s that time of the summer where you must get eager and wild at the sexiest “Noche de San Juan” event- Brava Beach. Come and enjoy a night of pure bliss, libation, and flirtation.
